Tiaro

Formerly known as Tiaro Shire, the local government area has been amalgamated into the Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Gympie Regional Council.

Hall_300x200Tiaro lies 200 kilometres north of Brisbane and is the gateway to the Fraser Coast.

Tiaro is 2,196 sq kilometres in area. Forty three percent (43%) is State Forest. Council maintains 656 kilometres of roads and sixty (60) bridges within the Tiaro area.

The name “Tiaro” is of aboriginal origins, dhaw-wa or tau-wau translates as withered or dead tree.

The first attempt at settlement in Tiaro occurred in 1842. In 1886, influenced by the Gympie Gold rush, that Tiaro became a recognised settlement.

Industries: Sugar cane fields, diary and beef cattle, small crops and hectares of pine trees in state forest.

Leisure and Tourism: The Mary River helps define the beautiful rural area of Tiaro and provides opportunities for leisure activities such as canoeing, swimming, camping and rafting and fishing.

Art galleries, craft shops and historic hotels add to the charm of Tiaro, while its countryside is popular for dirt biking, four-wheel driving and bushwalking.
