Hervey Bay's abundance of natural assets includes the Great Sandy Strait, World Heritage listed Fraser Island, the waters of the Bay and Lady Elliot Island, the southern most tip of the Great Barrier Reef.

From July to November Hervey Bay is home to the majestic humpback whales as they stop for rest and recreation on the return leg of their annual migration to the Antarctic waters.

Hervey Bay is recognised as one of Australia's fastest growing local authorities. Its population has grown from less than 30,000 people in 1991 to over 54,000 in 2006. Trends show this growth rate will continue.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council has focused on planning for growth, with intensive town planning, exciting urban designs and upgraded infrastructure.

HB_aerialviewThe Hervey Bay local authority area covers 2,357 square kilometres. From Burrum Heads to River Heads and South to Aldershot. It also covers the northern half of Fraser Island.

The city centre, based on the bayside localities of Pt Vernon, Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan, is structured around a network of parks, walkways and cycleways and is family friendly and accessible for people with mobility concerns.

Hervey Bay is now serviced by QantasLink and Virgin Blue with daily direct passenger jet services from Sydney and Brisbane and linkages to other Australian capital cities.

Major freight and coach companies also provide daily north and southbound round transport options, taking only three and a half hours to transport goods south to Brisbane.

Queensland Rail provides a daily service from Brisbane to Maryborough as well as High Speed Tilt Train passenger service to the Fraser Coast daily from Brisbane and Cairns.
